Three clients we avoid working with

Saturday, 20 September 2008

We love our clients. We really do. It happens that all our clients are very intelligent and nice people. But we also deal with many people who come to discuss their potential projects and we understand that we won’t likely be able to work together. Why? I will tell you that later. First take a look at three clients we decided avoid working with.

Client #1: I want to have a 100% Youtube (MySpace, Facebook, Ebay, Amazon) clone

First of all we are against of 100% clones. Of course, there are many websites and web applications with typical or similar functionality. But each project must somehow differentiate from others. We strongly believe that web projects must have unique, interesting and new features in order to succeed and it’s impossible to succeed by making a 100% clone.

The second thing is that such clients usually don’t really realize what they really want. Perhaps great success and popularity of mentioned above web applications makes them think that they can get rich if they also have something like that. Unfortunately all that results in wasting of time.

Client #2: I have a brilliant idea. This web application will bring me $XXXX.XX monthly. And believe me or not I am so generous that I can give you 50% share if you implement it!

Sorry, we are not interested. Why? No reason, we’re not interested and that’s it.

Client #3: I don’t know. Just do it somehow... I don’t care actually

Uninterested client is a very strange person. Most of our clients can’t wait to get involved in our work, but uninterested client just wants things done with as little effort from them as possible. We are happy to have a creative freedom when developing something but we also need our clients to be interested. We ask questions, discuss, make suggestions and if we get a minimal response it’s very hard to deal then.

To sum it up I would like to answer the question from the beginning of my note: why avoid working with them? The answer is simple. Our main rule is don’t make promises unless you will keep them. When we deal with one of these clients we understand that we won’t be able to make a good web application for them according to their requirements. Just because we love our clients and care about our reputation.
